Wild Dog Winery was established in 1982 with the planting of vines by the Farrington Family at their dairy farm 3 kms south of Warragul. A winery was built in the early nineties and the expansion of the vineyard continued with 8 varieties established with an area of 20 acres. A 600 tree olive grove was established that produces olives and oil.
In 2005 the property was purchased by the Surman Family with extensive upgrading of the vineyard and additional varieties planted and grafted. Major expansion and improvements to the winery were carried out and a new restaurant and cellar door was opened in 2009.
Wetland, walking trails, boardwalk and bush tucker gardens were established in 2013 with the assistance of a matching Commonwealth Government grant to boost tourism visitation to the region.
The winery has been recognised over the last decade with numerous wine show medals and awards over many of its varietal categories. It was granted a 5 star rating in the James Halliday Wine Companion 2016.
The restaurant has also won numerous local, regional and state awards, highlighted with the winning of the national award for the Best Restaurant in a Winery Category at the 2015 Restaurant and Caterers Association National Awards.
This year the property has taken a new direction with the Winery and Vineyard being leased to William Downie and Patrick Sullivan and the restaurant leased to chef Trevor Perkins and has been named Hogget Kitchen. The Wild Dog Winery will continue with a more refined and a lesser quantity of boutique wines produced at the winery. The Surman family have other ambitious plans to further enhance the property as a tourist destination. The wine varieties established at the Wild Dog Vineyard are:-
Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Semillon, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Viognier.
Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc , Merlot.
Wild dog Winery is owned by Gary & Judy Surman. Gary is a Civil Engineer, Judy is a midwife, they are both retired from these pursuits and have been involved with hospitality, tourism and the wine industry for over 20 years.
Luke Surman is the General Manager of our properties and Sales Manager of Wild Dog Wines. The Winery and Restaurant are now leased out as previously detailed above.
