Lightfoot Wines sits on a hill, looking over the Mitchell River valley towards the Gippsland Lakes, with the secret to their success hidden in plain sight.  The Myrtle Point Vineyard, with its finger-like plateau of terra rossa topsoil over limestone, is unique terroir in this region and the heart of the family-run business. The 29ha vineyard is Gippsland’s largest, producing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Gamay and Shiraz.

Helen and Brian Lightfoot began planting the vineyard in 1995, initially as contract grapegrowers.  Sons Rob & Tom Lightfoot took over the vineyard from their parents in 2007, after spending time away from the region learning from industry heavyweights in Australia and overseas. Today they run the business, embracing biological viticulture and both traditional and experimental winemaking.

Dedicated to making wines that reflect their unique character, Lightfoot Wines express cool coastal influences and the unique geology of the vineyard. Winemaking is in the hands of Alastair Butt and Tom Lightfoot.  Alastair brings more than 25 years of winemaking experience to the winery, working previously at Seville Estate (Yarra Valley) and Brokenwood (Hunter Valley).  Tom worked a number of vintages in wineries throughout Australia and the USA (making Pinot Noir in Oregon) after completing a Viticultural Science and Wine Production degree. He now manages the vineyard and assists Alastair in winemaking.

The cellar door boasts panoramic views of the vineyard, Mitchell River and the Lindenow Valley and Great Dividing Range, and is a must-visit for those sunset shots. Enjoy a relaxed tasting with platters of Gippsland’s fine produce, or bring a group for special occasions.
